Our Land Is Disappearing: The Erosion Emergency in Igbo Land

Across Southeast Nigeria, gully erosion is no longer just an environmental problem—it is a growing humanitarian emergency.

In affected communities, roads are being divided, farmlands are disappearing, homes are moving dangerously close to collapsing gullies, and families are watching the land inherited from their ancestors gradually vanish. Every heavy rainfall deepens the fear and increases the danger.

This crisis demands more than temporary repairs. We urgently need proper drainage systems, watershed restoration, tree planting, community education, early-warning programmes, and transparent completion of erosion-control projects.

The Southeast Community Development Forum is calling on governments, development partners, the private sector, traditional institutions, and the Igbo diaspora to act before more lives, livelihoods, and communities are lost.

Our land is our inheritance. Protecting it cannot wait.
